Tips:

If you have a habit of snapping your board, on purpose or by accident, do what I do. Get cheep beginner skateboards but good trucks, wheels and bearings so your board will still work like a pro's board but replacing your deck will barely be a hassle. A different way to prolong the life of your board is to buy rail guards, they are long plastic strips that stop your board from getting scratched up or snapping when you use rails or they can hold your board together if you jump on it wrong. My recommendation for rail guards is pig rails, I wouldn't buy anything else.

When you clean your bearings you're going to be tempted to take them apart and pull out the ball bearings to clean them separately, please don't do this unless you are very experienced and know how to put them back together. To clean your bearings pull them out of the wheels and leave them in a glass of warm water with a few drops of dish washing liquid and then after, if you own any, try putting some speed cream under the ball baring caps before putting them back in your wheels.

As a frequent on road skater I have learned that even though you can see cars that doesn't mean they can see you so make sure you are paying attention, never have two headphones in at the same time because you will have to listen out for cars. If you still need to frequently check your foot position when skating then you are not ready to skate on roads as you need to be looking up and alert at all times. If possible try and stick to cycle lanes as they are far safer, even though they are safer that does not mean they're safe so still stay alert.

When out skating far away from home be sure to always carry a skateboard tool with you. Skateboard tools also known as T tools are very affordable and useful if anything wrong ever happens to your board. familiarise yourself with how to use one either by watching some YouTube videos or by reading some websites.

IT'S COOL TO BE SAFE! I've made many mistakes in my time skating and some of my biggest regrets have been times where I thought that helmets or padding looked stupid. If you see me out then you will know that I don't wear helmets or padding but that is because I am very experienced and know how to be safe in the tricks that I do. If anyone says that you look stupid for wearing a helmet or padding call them a poser and continue on with your day.

Don't be embarrassed to make mistakes, if you are afraid to try new things because you are worried you will mess up, don't be. If you never try new things you will never master new things and you'll get bored very quickly. If you fall then get back up and if you fall again keep going because eventually you will stop falling and look awesome!

You shouldn't be scared of locals at skate parks. 9 times out of 10 they're willing to help and they definitely won't judge you for being a beginner, they've been in your boots back when they were starting. Don't be afraid to look at more experienced skaters to see little things that they do well that you could be doing better.

Many people on the internet will tell you to never skateboard in the rain but as Welsh people that can be incredibly difficult. I suggest getting a very cheep board that you can take out when it's raining just in case the deck gets waterlogged or the bearings rust. Skate Cardiff is a new company but our future plans do include a free surface for refurbishing bearings and trucks.

If you see me or anyone wearing a Skate Cardiff staff hoodie you can always ask us for help or to help fix something wrong with you're board we might not be able to help but if we can we will.
